About IIBH

1. What we do

Institute of International Harmonization for Building and Housing (IIBH) aims to contribute to the development of the building and housing sector in Japan by promoting international harmonization of technologies, systems, codes and standards in the field of building and housing, and by promoting international activities such as exchanges with other countries. We conduct the following activities:
  1. Research on technologies, standards, and systems of buidling and housing in other countries, and on international harmonization of Japanese technologies, standards, and systems of building and housing.
  2. Support for the operation of bilateral conferences in building and housing sector.
  3. Support for international cooperation with developing countries in building and housing sector.
  4. Any other activities necessary to achieve the objectives of this organization.
Under the above policies, IIBH represents Japan's ISO Member Body in building and housing sector. As the administrator/secretariat, IIBH operates Japan's Technical Advisory Groups/mirror committees to ISO Technical Committees and Sub Committees concerned. These are our main activities.

2. History

1985April Association of International Communication for Building and Housing (AICBH) is founded.
The aim is to support the following governmental bilateral conferences:
  • Japan-France Building and Housing Conference
  • Japan-Canada Housing Committee
  • Japan-Denmark Housing Conference
1986August Japan-Korea Housing Conference begins.
1990November Research on international building codes and standards is added to the scope of activities.
1991March Japan-China Building and Housing Conference begins.
April Takes over as representative of ISO Member Body (MB) for the following committees of ISO from Architectural Institution of Japan (AIJ):
ISO/TC10/SC8, ISO/TC59, ISO/TC92, ISO/TC98
1992May Becomes representative of MB for ISO/TC205.
1994May Joins ICIS (International Construction Information Society).
1998May AICBH changes name to Institute of International Harmonization for Building and Housing (IIBH).
Takes over as secretariat of Committee for building research for IEA (International Energy Agency) from Institute for Building Environment and Energy Conservation (IBEC).
2000July

Becomes representative of MB for ISO/TC219/WG2 and WG3.

(Another body takes it over in May 2018)

2002February Asian Forum begins. (Held 5 times until 2006)
2003April Takes over as representative MB for ISO/TC163 and TC163/SC2 from Thermal Insulation Standard Council.
November Becomes representative MB for ISO/TC21/SC11.
2012May Becomes representative MB for ISO/TC268.
2013January Japan-Germany Conference on Policies for Improving the Environmental Performance of Buildings begins.
2015April Incorporates as a general incorporated association in Japan.
